What is Western Art?

The Navigators and the Pioneers went on a field trip to the Tacoma Art Museum to see the Haub Family Collection of Western Art. Ms Head, our art specialist, had prepared us well and we were eager to see the paintings, portraits and sculptures of this fine collection.

Remembering our museum etiquette

Marie Watt’s bronze Blanket Stories: Transportation Object, Generous Ones
These 350 blankets collected from the community tell a story.

The "west" changed as the United States grew.

Curt Walters, Supreme Moment of Evening
We looked for all the different types of lines--horizontal, vertical, diagonal, zig zag, squiggly...
When asked "What is a line?" one first grader answered "a lot of dots in a row."

Horizontal lines

Same Grand Canyon, different style
Ed Mell, Rain and Runoff

Looking at the details of a Charlie Russell painting
(As a Montana native, I know him on a first name basis (͡• ͜ʖ ͡•))
CMR, When the Plains Were His

Experiencing the sights, smells, sounds, tastes and feelings of dinner on the prairie
Mian Situ, Beef, Beans and Biscuits

Who is the main character? What is he feeling?
Kevin Red Star, Buffalo Horse Medicine

"Why are there so many people walking in the line?"
John Clymer, Chief Joseph

Monte Beckman (saddlemaker) and Ernie Marsh (silversmith), Saddle
"Wow!"

Tacoma School of the Arts students teach us how to use watercolor pencils.

Painting a landscape

So many layers, so many colors

Gilbert Stuart's Portrait of George Washington was not on display
so we'll just have to go again to the TAM!
