What does it take to make an apple pie?
A lot of math!
So we began by having a "question storming" session:
- How many people?
- How many pies?
- How many pieces will each person have?
- How many slices will each pie have?
- How big will the pieces be?
- How many apples will we need?
- How will we measure an apple?
- What other ingredients will we need? How much?
Over the next few days we did the math:
- counting how many people
- deciding how big each piece would be and deciding to divide the pie into 8 pieces
- doing the addition/multiplication and figuring that we would need 3 pies
- estimating how many apples
- cutting up a few apples (from our playground!), measuring them and getting a more accurate number
- multiplying all the ingredients by 3 using measuring utensils and rice to know how much we would need
A sampling of our mathematical thinking:
And then we were ready:
|
Washing the apples |
|
Measuring the flour |
|
Measuring the sugar |
|
Measuring and cutting the butter |
|
Slicing the apples |
|
Making the crust |
|
Our apples were small. It took a lot of apples! |
|
Filling the pie and putting on the crumble |
|
Pie 1 |
|
Pie 2
Pie 3 |
Hot out of the oven:
|
If we cut it in half, how many pieces will we have? |
|
How many times do I have to cut it to make 8 pieces?
|
And now for the best part!
