May 30, 2014 Mining Crystals and Garnets

We mined crystals out of geodes from Morocco.

We mined garnets out of  mica schist from mountains in northern Georgia.

May 30-31, 2014 Zoo Snooze with the Sharks

A long time tradition for Seabury first and second graders is to have a great, big sleepover at the Point Defiance Zoo. It is known as the "Zoo Snooze" and we literally sleep right below the sharks. What a great way  to top off our studies of animals and their ecosystems. Highlights of the event included
touching the stingrays,
a night time tour of the zoo,
a craft and a midnight (almost) snack.
Oh, and "sleeping" with the sharks, of course!

May 29, 2014 Flat Brody Visits the Navigators

We have had a friend named Flat Brody visit us for a few days. He arrived in the mail to join us in our everyday life in the Navigator's class. Here are a few of his adventures:

He came through the mail all the way from
Vancouver, Washington to visit us in Tacoma.
He enjoyed standing atop one of our
Washington state salt dough maps.

Here he is reading a book from the Flat Stanley series.

He read books with us.

He especially enjoyed this book.

He enjoyed being the center of attention!

He had snack with us.

He went to see our play, Ali Baba and the Thieves

He was especially impressed with the creativity
and the acting ability of the Navigators.
Bravo! Bravo!

Then it was time to put him back in his envelope and send him back to his classroom.
We enjoyed you having you, Flat Brody. Come again!!

May 21, 2014 Eating Rocks: Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic

"Doing science":  making home-made edible rocks. And while we're at it, we're learning about the three types of rocks and the rock cycle.

    1. Igneous rocks (volcanic) are formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.
    1. Lollypops cooked up to 310 degrees and cooled to room temperature.

    1. Sedimentary rocks (layered) are formed by sediment that is deposited over time, usually as layers at the bottom of lakes and oceans. The sediment is compressed over a long period of time before consolidating into solid layers of rock.

  1. Layers of vanilla wafers, butterscotch chips, chocolate chips and nuts.

  1. Metamorphic rocks (changed) have been changed over time by extreme pressure and heat.

Ready to bake for 20 minutes to make soft cookies.
And then sliced and cooked for another 10 minutes to "morph" into metamorphic cookies.

The best part: eating rocks!

May 21, 2014 Treasures From the Rock and Gem Shop

On May 21 the Navigators, Explorers and Bumblebees went on a rock hunting expedition to Jerry's Rock and Gem shop in Kent. We listened to a dinosaur doctor (Dr. Joan, the owner of the store, has a PHD in paleontology) and then went shopping for treasures! We were enthusiastic rock hounds to start with and are now Super Enthusiastic Rock Hounds with great intentions to go back for more!

Dr. Joan, the dinosaur doctor, uses cookies to teach about rocks.
(Notice her Ms Frizzle-esque shirt!)

So much to choose from

Lots of oohs...

...and ahs

Decision time

Some things are too expensive...

...but maybe we can buy a bone fragment.

Or maybe we'll have to go directly
to the source
to find more treasures!

Add to birthday list:
gift certificate to Jerry's Rock and Gem shop
Gem Trails of Washington
hiking boots
rock tumbler
