January 24, 2014 The Human Body: Thinking Like a Scientist

Scientific Vocabulary:

Our bodies are made up of cells. A group of cells make a tissue, a group of tissues make an organ, a group of organs make a system, a group of systems make a body!

We each made a mobile of the various cells in our body, creating our own unique designs.

Scientific Equipment:

We used microscopes to look at skin cells up close and sketched them in our Science Journals.

Scientific Method:

We already use the scientific method naturally (Brain Rules for Babies by John Medina) but we are learning how to record the steps in our Science Journals.

The Touching Experiment
  • The Question: Which part of our body is the most sensitive?
  • Hypothesis: various answers
  • Procedure: Blindfold your partner. Touch various parts of their hand and arm with a bent paper clip 10 times, either with one or two parts of the paper clip.
  • Result: Record your results
  • Conclusion: Which part of the body (hands and arms) is the most sensitive. Why do you think so?

Scientific Extensions:

We then tried to read a Braille chart and The Little Engine That Could written in Braille to discover if we could tell the difference between the different letters.

And, as most scientists know, we are beginning to think, "Science is fun!"
