October 12, 2013 Happy Columbus Day!

In Social Studies we are studying the Age of Exploration. This week we continued to look for the reasons why explorers explored and we focused on Christopher Columbus. Perfect timing for Columbus Day!

We took a look at this early map of Juan de la Cosa, the captain of the Santa Maria. It is the oldest known European cartographic representation of the New World.  Parts of North and South America are on the map but much of them are still "The Unknown."

Here we are playing "Voyage to the Indies." In the process we  learned more about the land Christopher Columbus believed to be the Indies and we practiced our map skills. After the game we compared how the game was similar to the first voyage of Christopher Columbus and how it was different.

We are so glad the Spice Islands in the East Indies were discovered by Europeans so many years ago! Here we are experiencing the aroma of various spices and making our own Spice Cookies. Yum!
