Experiencing the flow of Holton Rower...

"Born in 1962, Holton Rower lives and works in New York. Rower expresses a fascination in the substance of the various materials he uses particularly in his ‘Pour’ paintings. With the process as intriguing as the resultant kaleidoscopic canvas, Holton toys with the precarious relationship between artistic manipulation and chance.Cup by cup, hundreds of different colours cascade down, determining their own path like a flowing stream of lava.  Holton experiments with the forces of nature, letting his artistic process be guided by gravity."

February 11, 2014 This Is What Multiplication Looks Like

"Math is fun!" is our motto in math class.
Here we are "playing" with manipulatives
and doing some big multiplication (and division) problems:

Gathering the base ten blocks to equal the product
Making the array

Gather 2 hundreds, 4 tens, 2 ones and make an array
22 X 11 = 242
or 242 ÷ 11 = 22
Gather 4 hundreds, 6 tens, 2 ones and make an array
21 X 22 = 462
 462 ÷ 21 = 22
Is there another way to show 462?
42 X 11 = 462
462 ÷ 11 = 42

January 31, 2014 Multicultural Performances

S.O.S.
Seabury on Stage

The Navigators are a diverse, multicultural group of children with many different pursuits and passions. This past Friday Gathering we were privileged to get a glimpse of their lives outside of school.

Flamenco folk dancing from Spain

We each got a chance to learn the technique of this unique type of drumming.

I had the chance to go see her performance at the Lacey Ethnic Celebration.
So fun to surprise her!

January XXXI, MMXIV Super Bowl XLVIII Math!

II, IV, VI, VIII,
Who do we appreciate?
SEAHAWKS!!

The treasure chest full of "super bowl" loot
On January XXXI the Navigators and the Explorers went on a time warp adventure back to the days of ancient Rome. We were given a treasure chest full of “super bowls.” Each “super bowl” contained a treasury of rare ancient coins worth I, V, X, C and L cents! The task set before us was to figure out the secret code and translate Roman Numerals into Arabic Numerals. The task was not easy but amazingly the crew of the SS Seabury were able to unlock the code. We then made sure to come back in time to MMXIV in order to be back for Superbowl XLVIII.

Super Bowl Challenge
Can you crack the code and answer the following questions in Arabic Numerals?

1. Which Super Bowl is it? XLVIII
2. How many points is a touchdown worth? VI
3. How many points is the point after worth? I
4. How many points is a field goal worth? III
5. How many quarters are in a football game? IV
6. How many yards are on a football field? C
7. What are the Seahawks fans known as? XII
8. What do fans do when their team makes a score? V
9. How many players are on the field at one time? XXII
10. How does this cheer go? II, IV, VI, VIII, who do we appreciate?
11. When was the only other Super Bowl appearance of the Seahawks?
Super Bowl XL
12. The Seahawks lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. What was the score?
XXI to X
13. Who did the Seahawks play two weeks ago? XLIXers
14. What year was Super Bowl I? MCMLXVII

January 29 Drawing faces

Mr. Adam, a volunteer in our classroom and also an art teacher at Summer at Seabury, is teaching us how to draw! Using four rectangles, we gained a perspective on human face proportions. And what started out as a lesson on realistic looking faces turned into a fun creative experience. We are very fortunate to have Mr. Adam to guide and inspire us. We can't wait to see his recently published children's book, Dog Party.

The first book in a series of children's books focused around celebrating dogs, companionship, and owner diversity.
