Differentiation for Reals: Literacy Using The Daily 5™

At Seabury School we strive to use the best, best practices in teaching our gifted and talented students. We often talk of how we differentiate for individual needs but are we really walking the talk?

In our quest for conquering this difficult task, Mrs. Maitlen and I have discovered a management program called the Daily 5™.

We are so excited about it that we are presenting how it works in our classrooms this weekend at the Washington Association of Educators of the Talented & Gifted (WAE-TAG). Check out our Prezi and our classroom pictures and watch for the eager, engaged students!

We "Read to Self" every day. Studies show that the best way to become a better read is to read!

"Listen to Read" is a popular choice.

"Read to Someone" is another choice.
Sometimes we have "book club". Here we are reading Pedro's Journal, a historical fiction account of a ship boy aboard the Santa Maria with Christopher Columbus. We also gather in small groups for Junior Great Books, a program designed with gifted students in mind.

"Work on Writing" is a choice.
Why do we write everyday? To become better writers!
Why is it that some gifted students like to write in yellow? :)
Students work at their own level. This student is using quotation marks.
These two are working on writing a book together. Excitement is in the air!
We use Words Their Way for the "Word Work" choice.
This student is working on the -at word family.
This student is working on plural variations.
This student is at the syllables and affixes stage.
Setting individual goals
The Daily 5 program has caused our students to become strong, independent, skilled readers and writers. It has enabled Mrs. Maitlen and I to teach strategies and to work with students individually, in small focus groups and to the group as a whole.

Differentiation for reals!

Be sure to watch the Prezi linked above and see why
WE LOVE WHAT WE DO!
